Miscarriage Statistics
Pregnancy is a beautiful experience
that nearly all women hope to experience and get through successfully. Unfortunately, miscarriages can happen
and the chances of experiencing a miscarriage are more common than most people
think. Believe it or not, miscarriage is pretty common among women today and this article is
going to present a series of statistics to give a clear idea just how major the chances of having
a miscarriage are among pregnant women.
According to most studies
conducted, a miscarriage can occur in 20 – 25% of recognized
pregnancies or pregnancies that are realized by both parents
and doctors. If we are to include unrecognized pregnancies in which the woman is unaware of her conception, the rate could go up to
more than 50%. Reports have shown that within this range, the
miscarriage would happen during the 13th to the 22nd week of pregnancy. Once a miscarriage occurs,
the woman will experience several signs such as vaginal bleeding with or without pain, abdominal cramps, loss or
decrease in pregnancy symptoms, weight loss, and at times grayish tissues passing from the
vagina. There is a 75% chance of a miscarriage occurring during the
first two weeks of pregnancy, but as you continue on to your 6th to 12th week, the chances lower down to about 5% to
10%.
The statistics are based on several
factors, one of which is the age of the woman. Healthy women under 30 years
old have a 15% - 20% chance of experiencing a miscarriage while women above 30 would have a 20% -
35% chance and women above 40 are reported to have a 50% chance. Another factor would be
the frequency of the occurrence of miscarriage. Women who have
experienced miscarriage for the first time have a 10% to 13% chance of experiencing it again while
those who experienced recurrent miscarriage (two or more miscarriages in the past) have a higher chance ranging from 40% to
50%. But according to some
studies, the rate lowers if a woman is able to have one or more live births after going through a miscarriage
in the past.
These miscarriage statistics do not
totally define the end-results of every pregnancy. Every woman and every
child is different and unique and some pregnancies will progress far better than
others. How well you take care of yourself, your
daily diet, and how active your lifestyle is will help determine the success of your pregnancy at the end of the
journey.
